Crime
Prevention Tips
 |
Bicycle
Safety
 |
You
can maintain a safety plan for yourself and loved ones
or friends by adhering to a few quick reminders and
common sense suggestions:
 |
Chaperon
small children
- adults should accompany small children whenever
practicable. |
 |
Obey
all traffic control devices
- don't impede other traffic - it's the
law. |
 |
Never
ride between parked vehicles
- motorists may not see you. |
 |
Properly
equip your bicycle
- with lights and audible warning devices (bells,
etc.) |
 |
Ride

Internet
Safety Tips for Children
 |
With
the ever-increasing popularity of the internet and the
so-called "information super highway," it has
become imperative that children's access be continually
monitored. Below are just a few suggestions as to
how you may protect your child against potential
pitfalls and danger.
 |
Familiarize
yourself
with the services your child utilizes. You
may want to "block" information you find
objectionable. |
 |
Never
allow a child to arrange face-to-face meetings
with anyone. |
 |
Never
allow children to respond to messages that
are suggestive, obscene or threatening. |
 |
Never
give out identifying information
such as home address, school name or telephone
number in public places such as bulletin boards or
chat rooms. |
 |
Remind
your child that people online may not be who they
seem to be. |
|
|
 |
Residential
 |
We are quite fortunate in Bronxville to have garnered
a reputation as a very law abiding, orderly community based upon courtesy
and an undeniable sense of good will. However, a criminal element exists
at all times in society, and we must take measures to protect our
interests. Making one's
home and property as "crime-proof" as possible is really quite simple.
While some of the tips below may seem rather
"matter-of-fact," they can be of great assistance.
 |
Lock
doors and windows
at all times, even when you
are out of the house for a short while.
|
 |
Engage
your alarm whenever
appropriate and keep the alarm code restricted
only to family members and "emergency
contacts." |
 |
Keep
lights on whenever
possible. Potential burglars or other
criminals are furtive by nature, and they shy away
from well-lit areas. |
 |
Remain
wary
of any unusual circumstances and/or individuals
who appear to have no purpose for driving in the
area. Again, as the saying goes, "an
ounce of prevention is worth a pound of
cure." |
|
|
 |
Vehicle
Safety
 |
Safeguarding
one's vehicle is another aspect of preventative
enforcement which many people too often take for
granted. Adhere to a few obvious, yet overlooked
tips and you will help to minimize the chances of having
your day ruined by a would-be car thief or vandal.
 |
Lock
your vehicle
at all times. |
 |
Never
leave your vehicle running and unattended, even
for short periods. |
 |
Garage
your vehicle
whenever possible. |
 |
Keep
valuables out of sight
(cell phone, pagers, etc.) |
 |
Don't
keep original documents in your vehicle,
make copies of required personal papers and/or
documents and keep the originals at home. |
|
 |
Just
a Reminder
 |
As
you must have heard by now, driving while speaking
on a hand-held cell phone is ILLEGAL, save
for exigent circumstances. Please be safe
and use only speaker phones in your vehicle or
wait until you've reached your destination to make
your call. |

"Dark
House" Notification
 |
Furthering
efforts to keep your home and property safe, the Bronxville
Police Department offers daily "dark house" checks,
performed by police officers in the normal course of their
duties. All
residents are welcome to contact the police department and
request a physical check of the exterior of their home during
times when the house is vacant.
A brief phone call to the police desk will provide all
the information necessary to allow officers to detect any
suspicious or unusual circumstances at your residence.
Through this service, we may assist with doors and/or
windows which may have inadvertently been left open or
unlocked. Subsequently,
we will gladly contact you (if you choose to leave us a
convenient phone number) or we can contact neighbors or family
members whom you designate as "emergency contacts." This
service has provided wonderful "peace of mind" to many
residents prior to vacations or holiday times when homes may
be left unattended for long periods.

Helping
to Educate Our School-aged Children
 |
The
police department is extensively involved with our school system,
providing a series of programs and lectures to all boys and girls,
nursery school through high school. Throughout
the year, officers visit our schools and provide helpful hints and
information regarding issues ranging from Halloween safety to the
perils of under-aged alcohol parties and mischievous behavior.
General safety topics are also discussed, and children are
continually encouraged to seek the aid of police officers during
emergencies or when suspicious situations arise.
We also provide very popular tours of police headquarters
and patrol vehicles for younger children accompanied by adult
chaperones.
|
|
 |
Medical
Emergencies
 |
Members of the Bronxville Police Department are trained to respond
in the event of medical dilemmas and provide essential care for everything
from minor scrapes and burns to life-threatening emergencies.
Because of our minimal response time, we are often at the scene of
such an emergency in seconds, and we can therefore assess the
situation quickly, initiate remedial treatments and comfort patients until
the ambulance corps arrives. Trained
to administer cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as the
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) apparatus, police officers can also
provide critical care when deemed necessary.
|
|
 |
Our
Department
 |
The department, comprised of 23 dedicated individuals, staffs
a chief of police, one lieutenant, two detectives, five uniformed sergeants and 14 patrolmen. In addition to the
continual patrol and crime prevention measures undertaken throughout the day and
night, the police department provides prompt and courteous service for a wide
variety of situations.
 |
Bicycle
Patrol
 |
The Police Department maintains a bicycle patrol unit which remains quite
popular with residents, merchants and visitors to Bronxville.
Bicycle patrol enables each assigned officer to personally interact
with the public and provides officers the opportunity to become
particularly familiar with their surroundings. Thus, powers of observation are enhanced and unusual
circumstances are more readily detected.

|
 |
Detective
Division
 |
The Bronxville Police Department's Detective Division conducts all
follow-up investigations and maintains continual contact with other area
police departments and the Westchester County District Attorney's
Office. Through such mutual
access with other law enforcement agencies, the detective division is able
to monitor possible crime trends and suggest preventative measures, while
availing the department of the latest developments in investigative
techniques. Additionally, the detective division delivers crime
prevention lectures to various groups, offers fingerprinting services to
villagers and small children for identification purposes and security
surveys for residences and businesses.
In the very near future, the detective division will begin a
program by which they will provide Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.)
etching for automobiles. This
process will "brand" vehicles with their 17-character, state issued
V.I.N. number, making vehicle identification and recovery a much easier
task.
|
|
 |
Youth
Division
 |
The Bronxville Police Department is keenly aware of the issues and
dilemmas facing today's youth, and specially trained officers administer
to these problems for our younger residents.
From youth crime to resolving non-criminal matters, the Youth
Division can provide invaluable assistance and direction.

Residential
Alarm Permit
 |
Who
must register and why?
 |
All
residential alarms must be registered with the Village, and
the police department oversees and directs this registration
process. An Alarm Permit Application Form
may be obtained through the department
or this web site, and such a form will include information
regarding emergency contacts for your residence, alarm system data and
other pertinent points of interest. In the event of ANY activation, police officers
WILL RESPOND
to your home if contacted by your particular alarm company. |

We'll
Keep Your Residential Key

As an added courtesy to villagers, the
police department maintains a library of residential keys in the event of
emergencies or at times when you inadvertently may have been

Residents wishing to complete this form will thereby allow members
of the Bronxville Police Department to search their homes, in the absence
of a search warrant or exigent circumstances, in order to prevent or
investigate any potentially dangerous situations.
Such a form is particularly useful at times when homeowners are
away and children gather for parties which involve alcohol.
